In a densely populated world with corresponding increase in demand for quality engineering service, it goes without saying that the imperishable essence of an engineer cannot be overemphasized. The engineer in question must be well-rounded with at least a foggy clue with other fields of engineering other than a specified field, this engineering versatility will prove useful if the engineer must be able to work effectively and communicate with other professionals in the family of engineering.
It is therefore based on this invaluable need that the NUC as incorporated into its curriculum specially designed program called SWEP for year two and three students who has successfully completed the general engineering courses. SWEP is an acronym meaning “Students Work Experience Programme”. It is such a program poised at providing student with practical knowledge for general engineering processes and safety practices as are obtained in the world of engineering.
2017/2018 sets of the university doing SWEP TWO, the programme ran for one month with lots of activities which triggered interest and participation. The orientation exercise, exposure to practical aspects of many engineering works in the workshops and laboratories, log booking and technical report made the SWEP programme worth traversing.
Frequent chapters below are mainly summarized on weekly basis, every work done was recorded in the log book during the course of the program.
The 2017/2018 academic long vacation programme SWEP kicked off on the 30th of July, 2018. The programme was set aside for students who have successfully completed the general engineering courses at 200 and 300 level respectively. It started with the registration of students for the program. After the registration, an addressed speech followed by the Dean of the faculty- Engr. Prof. Aniekan Offiong.
The program review and orientation exercise also came along in week one where students were informed about the SWEP and why it was organized at the first instance. Dr. I.E. Markson was the orientator, he nicely phrased SWEP as an in house program, he urged all participating students to take the program serious as it will prepare for real and challenging world of engineering ahead.
Still in week one, a lecture was aptly organized for students, a guest lecturer Engr. O.S Kupolati was brought to take the lecture, the lecture anchored on INDUSTRIAL SAFETY. In the course of the lecture Engr. kupolati had mentioned a host of salient points relating to safety especially at the industrial level. After defining the term safety, he went on introducing dangers that are likely to occur if safety measures are not taken, he recommended the use of personal protecting equipment (PPE) at all time when working especially with machines and electricity in a firm.
Still in week one we had lectures on pollution control led by Engr. Okorie Agwu and also Engineering maintenance by Engr. Dr. Bassey B. Okon. Here we learnt on causes, effect and how to control pollution and also maintenance of engineering tools.
The activity of week one came to a standstill with a familiarization tour of all the workshops and laboratories in the faculty of engineering, University of Uyo. During the tour, we visited newly built structures and those under construction in the school premises.
We had work on electrical/electronic circuits, tractor driving and maintenance and plant maintenance.
ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS: we visited the elect/elect lab and was well guided by the technologists there. In this day activity, we started by learning how to design and construct a transformer less battery charger for smart devices which was handled by Engr. Atainyene. We also learnt on electrical installation which was handled by Mr. Etop, he group us and gave us a task to build an installation on a board, he said that with this we can be able to wire a complete building.
TRACTOR DRIVING AND MAINTENANCE: we visited the agric workshop for a lecture on tractor maintenance which was handled by Mr. Michael Ojelade and Mr. Hope Archibong. Here, we learnt on how tractors operates, number of hours a tractor can work in a day and the basic categories of maintenance carried out on a tractor. In the lecture, we discovered that a tractor can only work for 10hours daily after which a routine maintenance must be perform while after working for 250hours, the periodic maintenance is done.
PLANT MAINTENANCE: we visited the works department for a lecture on plant maintenance (generator) which was handled by Mr. Uduak James. Here, we learnt on various maintenance that must be carried out on a generator to make it function effectively. Just like tractors, the maximum time a generator can run is 250hours after which maintenance must be done but there are also some maintenance that should be done on a daily basis e.g. checking the oil gauge and air filter etc.
We had work on electrical installation work and machine tools maintenance
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION WORK: we visited the works department for lecture which was handled by Mr. Asuquo Udoh. Here, we learnt on how electricity supply is been generated and how it travels from the isolators to our respective houses and offices, how current travels, types of fuses, types of wiring that can be done and their advantages, types of cables and materials used for producing cables. Under cable, we learnt on various sizes of cables and what they are used for. These cables ranges from 1mm, 1.5mm which can be used for lightning, 2.5mm cable which can be used along with 13Amps socket for power installation, 4mm cables which can be used along with 15Amps socket also for power installation and so on.
MACHINE TOOLS MAINTENANCE: in this day activity, we were provided with a machine (drilling machine). The technologist in-charge explained what a drilling machine is all about and the type of job performed on a drilling machine. He said maintenance on this machine is very compulsory so as to make the machine work effectively and efficiently without breakdown. We performed maintenance duty on the machine by sandpapering the machine to scrub out rust, we used brooms and brushes to take out the rust, we also used diesel to wash every parts of the machine and finally we greased the adjustable shaft.

In the electrical installation which was led by Mr. Etop, we learnt how to use the relay to turn on & off a bulb without the use of switch. He showed us a practical example which he did and explained every stage of the work.
Week five was set aside for housekeeping and submission of logbooks and report writing to the coordinator.
Having gone through the SWEP for the stipulated 5weeks duration, I can say without reservations that the most cardinal objective of the program has been well obtained. Together with the host of other students, I have been overly exposed to general engineering processes and safety practices as are obtained in the world of engineering.
